Home Tour: Entryway

Entryway Tour | https://www.roseclearfield.com

Today I’m sharing a tour of our entryway. We’re blessed with a generous entryway space in our home. It’s so nice when people come over or we’re getting ready to go somewhere not to be crowded into a tiny space, which happens so often because it seems like there’s never enough room in the entryway. There is definitely enough room in this entryway, which is awesome. In our previous residence, we had a lovely three-season room entryway, which I did decorate. I’ve expanded on those decorations and also added some furniture for this entryway.

The entryway started with the “Clearfield” frame, open white frame, and Monument Square print. We received the “Clearfield” frame as a wedding present and finally have a place to display it where everyone sees it when they enter the house. I made the open white frame right before we moved. We received the frame with a canvas print as a gift that we hadn’t asked for…and never displayed. I removed the canvas, painted the frame white, and strung up the twine. I switch out the items in the frame for different seasons and holidays. The leaves template is available right here.

While were living in Milwaukee, I designed a Milwaukee gallery wall. I still have all of those prints up around the house (and will be sharing them in future room tour posts). But I wanted some prints for the entryway more centered around the new location. The Monument Square print is a reprint of a vintage postcard, and it got me searching for more vintage postcards. (It also led to me finding the lighthouse print for the guest bedroom.) I’ve since hunted down several dozen Wisconsin postcards and again, will be sharing more of them in future posts.

Both of the frames on the console table were gifts. None of the openings are standard so it’s a pain formatting, printing, and cutting images for them. The last time I’d switched out the pictures was when we were showing our Iowa condo (2011). Needless to say, I was way overdue to switch them out again. The frame on the left is black and white prints of our boys and Angel. The frame on the right is pictures of us with our good friends Joe and Melitta.

I mentioned in my kitchen art tour that I split up my glass jars throughout the house. Since we’ve lived here, I’ve added a few new pieces, too. I bought the mini pumpkins for my pumpkin muffins post and am now enjoying them in the living room and kitchen.

The coat closet isn’t very exciting, but it’s very functional. It was in need of a coat of paint so I gave it a fresh coat of my default neutral for this house: Baby Chick by True Value. The previous owners picked the gray and white shades in the room, which we really like and aren’t going to change anytime soon.

Since I had to take out all the shelves and hanging bar, I used the opportunity to rearrange them and bring in my two shoe racks from our previous residence. I also keep some footwear in an upstairs closet and switch out items for different seasons. At some point, I may try to keep more footwear upstairs year round so this closet isn’t quite so full. But for now, this system has worked okay. Jake keeps most of his footwear and outerwear in the mudroom by the back door. When we have a lot of company, I move my coats into the laundry room.

Before we moved, I almost ditched the wooden basket because I had no idea what to do with it. (It was another random gift.) Somehow inspiration struck at the last minute, and I picked up some silk flowers for it. Perfect. I have a tiny “home sweet home” cross-stitch to hang up under the flowers. Of course, I forgot about it before this shoot. #fail There’s always something. You can see my office to the right of the entryway. I still have a couple bigger projects to tackle before I give a full reveal of the office, but I’m so excited to start showing off little bits of recent progress.

I made the canvas art. I switch it out for different seasons and holidays. Currently, I have about nine canvases. I may add a few more this year, but a dozen will be more than sufficient to keep the space fresh and fun. Not surprisingly, the bench cubby is a very popular cat hang out. I’m displaying my two current favorite footwear items, which you can find here and here.

Finally, you can see the living room to the left. I’m going to paint it, and then we’ll get some frames on the walls before I show off the room in full. We have settled on the light green color you can see sampled to the left of the fireplace. I’m so excited to lighten up the space and put up some art.

Mini Home Tour: Powder Room

Bath, England Themed Powder Room | https://www.roseclearfield.com

Today I’m sharing a mini tour of our first floor powder room. It’s tiny and just perfect for the main floor of the home. It’s so convenient to have a bathroom on the main floor, and we don’t have the hassle of cleaning another large bathroom.

Our past two residences each had two bathrooms so we’ve had to outfit this bathroom with a few new items. Again, it’s really small and didn’t need any renovating when we moved in so the process has been pretty simple. I love the mirror, counter, and sink (it’s copper!) and selected a mix of neutral accessories to coordinate with them, which was fairly straightforward.

I’ve spent a little bit longer choosing art for the room. The inspiration for the Bath, England theme came from the postcard set. I’ve saved tons of postcards over the years and have been sorting through them since we moved for my kitchen clothespin display. I hadn’t thought about the Bath postcard set in years but was so happy to find it again. It fits the room so I went with it. I bought those postcards over 15 years ago so of course, I don’t have a link online. They’re done in a similar style to this watercolor postcard of Oxford.

Once I’d settled on the postcards, I knew that I wanted the other art pieces to be drawings or paintings (or prints of drawings or paintings). I have tons of photography displayed around the house, and it’s nice to mix up the wall art with a few other mediums. The drawings / paintings theme led me to A View of Lansdown Crescent, Bath. All Posters runs sales frequently, which means you can pick up this print (and many other prints) for 30-50% off or more if you watch their promotions.

It took me longer to settle on the final wall art. After months of combing Etsy and All Posters, I decided to search Pinterest, where I came across the artist Chris Lee. I was hooked right away. (You may remember me sharing this little story and mentioning the artist in a favorites post.) Of course, then it took me a couple more months to decide on a few pieces (Milsom Street, Sally Lunn, Lansdown) and get them printed and framed. But they’re finished now and up on the wall, completing this little space of the house.

Several people have commented that they think it’s fitting that the bathroom has a “Bath” theme. I promise this was a complete coincidence.

Thus far I’ve also shared home tours of our guest bedroom and kitchen wall art. Check them out if you haven’t already! I’ll continue to share one or two home tours monthly.

Mini Home Tour: Kitchen Wall Art

Today I’m sharing a short tour of the wall art in my kitchen. In previous residences, I haven’t had the option to display art on the kitchen walls. Aside from space over the sink to hang a calendar, I’ve had very limited space for hanging art. My one big kitchen decor project in our Milwaukee house was my glass jars with flowers display. I still love these jars and flowers. Lacking a big display area now, I have them arranged in small groups throughout the entryway, living room, kitchen pass through, and my office. I’ll share photos of them again at some point. But today, I’m focusing on the wall art in the kitchen.

Personally, I’m not a big fan of most kitchen wall art. Chalkboard or chevron prints with cheesy kitchen related jokes or lines about the things you do when you’re hangry or lacking coffee don’t fit my style. At all. And most of what you see on Etsy and similar sites is along these lines. Search Etsy for kitchen wall art, and you’ll see what I mean. So it’s taken me a while to find tasteful pieces that fit my style and work in the existing space.

For many years, one of my trademark kitchen features was the refrigerator covered in photos and magnets. In Milwaukee, I could also display Christmas cards on the side. I left them up all year round because I love looking at the pictures people send. Now I have stainless steel appliances, which as I’m sure many of you know, are not magnetic. So I picked up the magnetic framed boards at Target. The white framed board was originally a really boring medium brown that didn’t fit my style so I painted it.

Then I had to pair down the photos and magnets I wanted to display. The boards have less than half of the items I had displayed in Milwaukee when we moved. I try to switch up / update my kitchen photos a couple times a year, but I’ve only swapped out one or two photos since we moved.

I’m not sure when or how it struck me that I wanted to display “Bless us oh Lord” in the kitchen. I couldn’t find a print with it that I loved so I made my own. I know it’s so simple, but it’s one of my favorite pieces in the house now.

Jake and I almost always serve a specialty cheese when we have people over, typically a local smoked variety. Plus we live in Wisconsin. Enough said, right? The cheese print fits us.

I never would have filled this space on my own, but the silverware print is on a hook that’s painted onto the wall. Until we re-paint the kitchen (which isn’t happening anytime soon), something has to go there. I spent way too long browsing silverware prints to find just the right design. The girl who made this print is the same girl who made the lighthouse print I have in our guest bedroom.

I displayed the 8″x8″ square frame in the entryway in our Milwaukee house, but it fits better in our new kitchen. I swap out the art periodically to fit the current season or holiday. I use a combination of catalog covers (I love Paper Source) and free printables I’ve found online. I have a full list of the free printable sources I’ve used thus far at the end of this post.

Finally, in our Milwaukee house, I had a large clothespin photo display between the living room and dining room. Similar to the mason jars, I don’t have a space in our new home for this exact display. I took most of the current photos from that display for some new frames in my office and made the new clothespins displays another rotating season / holiday / whatever else I feel like display.

This past month, I’ve had varying festival photos on the top display because we’re well into festival season here in southeast WI. The bottom display has postcards from the current special exhibit at the Milwaukee Art Museum, American Epics. (It’s there until September 5. Go see it.) For September, I’m planning to print a selection of my new Glacier National Park photos and create an all Glacier display with some new postcards I got while we were there.

Silverware: Etsy (background color – whisper)
The “Bless us oh Lord,” cheese, silverware, and rotating square print frames are all from Michaels. If you’d like more specific details for locating any of these frames, let me know.

Free printables for the rotating 8″x8″ square frame: Sandy Toes and Popsicles, Remodelaholic, Brit + Co, Tater Tots and Jello (this post has the pictured waves), and My Love for Words.  I cropped all prints to 8″x8″ and had them printed with SmugMug. I have some more free printables collected over here as well.
