For the fall show this year, the Mitchell Park Domes are featuring coleuses. The Show Dome is home to over 30 varieties of coleus in a range of colors, patterns, shapes, and sizes. The vivid greens, yellows, reds, and pinks are the perfect camouflage for the forest animals hiding among the foliage. As you’ll see in my pictures, we spotted a handful of squirrels, rabbits, and other little creatures. The display is filled out with vines and grasses as well as a selection of gorgeous chrysanthemums.
When we last visited the Domes in mid-summer, Tommy was crawling. As such, this was his first time visiting the conservatory fully mobile. While he enjoyed checking out the flowers, he mostly loved being able to socialize so much easier. (Jake and I are so curious/just a little worried about what his socialization will look like once he can talk because it’s already pretty intense.) He also enjoyed swinging in the swing in the Show Dome, watching the fish in the Tropical Dome, and operating the wheelchair buttons at the entrances/exits to all of the domes.
I have no idea how long Tommy would spend working the wheelchair buttons and going in and out of the Domes. Toddler entertainment at its best.
Where the Coleuses Grow runs from September 22 through November 4, 2018. In addition to the Coleuses show, the Domes has a Dinos Under Glass exhibit up in the Tropical and Desert Domes that is running through this weekend. Dinos Under Glass will wrap on October 21.
The Mitchell Park Domes are always free on Monday mornings from 9:00 a.m.-noon except major holidays for Milwaukee County residents. Consult the website for more details about current hours, admission, and upcoming special events.
