Free printable vintage Niagara Falls postcards showcase the most famous waterfall on Earth in all its glory.
Earlier this year, I started releasing sets of free printable vintage postcards, rolling out collections of St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, and birthday postcards. Free printable vintage Niagara Falls postcards are among the first of many location-themed vintage postcard collections I’m releasing over the coming months. The Wisconsin Dells and Holy Hill are also currently available.
I am crazy about the aesthetic of vintage postcards from this era and am excited to share so many of them with you. The vintage Niagara Falls postcard collection features 21 postcards highlighting this stunning location.
Niagara Falls is without a doubt the most well-known waterfall on Earth. While far from the largest waterfall on Earth, it has the largest volume of water traveling through it. For over 200 years, Niagara Falls has been a popular tourist destination as well as an important source of hydroelectric power.
Niagara Falls is located on the border of New York and Ontario. Niagara Falls is actually three waterfalls: American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and Canadian or Horseshoe Falls. The area includes Goat and Luna Islands, Cave of the Winds, and the viewing areas Terrapin Point and Prospect Point Park, all of which are featured in this post.

Aero Cable Over Whirlpool Rapids
The Whirlpool Aero Car has been a fixture over the Niagara Gorge since 1916. Designed by the renowned Spanish engineer, Leonardo Torres Quevedo, the antique cable car is suspended from six sturdy cables. The ride provides stunning views of the Niagara Whirlpool and Class 6 whitewater Niagara River rapids.
The Whirlpool Aero Car travels between two Canadian shore points. However, car riders cross the United States-Canadian international border four times during the trip due to the path of the river. [Source]
The American Falls stand 167 feet in height and 1,100 wide. Technically, the American Falls are two distinct Falls. The smaller Falls are Luna Falls, which divides Luna Island from Goat Island. The Cave of the Winds is located behind Luna Falls.
The view on this postcard is taken from the east side of the Falls at the base of the precipice. Prospect Park is right above this point.
Goat Island is located halfway between the American and Canadian shores. A picturesque stone bridge joins the island to the American side. Night visitors to Goat Island see the lights on both sides of the falls.
Luna Island is a small island between the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, offering a stunning view of both Falls.
The effects of frost, erosion, and undermining of the rocks by falling water cause the contour of Niagara Falls to change constantly. The ragged crest line shown in this image of the American Falls is just one of the many shapes the Falls have taken on over the decades.
American Rapids Above the Falls Looking From Goat Island
A series of shelves and stubborn rocks create numerous miniature falls, resisting the current as they project themselves up toward the surface, creating a chaotic rapids of white spray and foam.
In the background of the image, you can see the Cataract House, the United Building, and the Niagara Hotel.
Cave of the Winds is a natural cave behind Bridal Falls at the Niagara Falls. The cave is approximately 130 feet high, 100 feet wide, and 30 feet deep. Discovered in 1834, it was originally called Aeolus’s Cave for the Greek god of winds. The constant pressure of the atmosphere by the reflex of the falling water gives the cave its constant winds. [Source] In this view of Cave of the Winds, you can see Rock of Ages and the American Falls.
The Cave of the Winds is a paid attraction and well worth the money for the up-close experience with the Falls that it provides. Visit Niagara Falls Live for more information about visiting Cave of the Winds.
Goat Island offers one of the best views of the Canadian or Horseshoe Falls. The colors in the sky in this image are stunning and nicely reflected in the Falls.
The Canadian Falls, which are the larger of the two Falls at Niagara, extend from Goat Island to the Canadian shore. The Falls form the general shape of a horseshoe, hence the nickname.
Prospect Park or Prospect Point Park is the prime viewing area for the American Falls and Rapids. It also houses the Visitors Center, Niagara Adventure Theater, Observation Tower, and Maid of the Mist. [Source]
A wide view of Terrapin Point stretched out in front of the Canadian Falls to give viewers a spectacular vantage point and optimal photo opportunities.
The narrowness of the Niagara Gorge and the shallowness of the Niagara River at this point form the Whirlpool Rapids. The river transitions abruptly from a calm, broad pool to a roaring avalanche, beating the water into a white foam and spray.
