A Milwaukee Memorial Day Tradition

Memorial Day at the VA 2018 | https://www.roseclearfield.com

I hope that everyone had a nice Memorial Day weekend. We had gorgeous weather here in southeast WI, Jake didn’t have to work, and we got to spent a lot of time with family and friends, enjoying good conversation, delicious food, and beautiful scenery.

All of that aside, one of my favorite things to do on Memorial Day weekend is visit Wood National Cemetery adjacent to the VA grounds in Milwaukee. There is nothing like seeing thousands of flags lined up along the graves to remember exactly what Memorial Day means.

I’m way overdue to post my pictures from Art in Bloom 2018, which I attended with Tommy over a month ago. Jake and I have been Milwaukee Art Museum members for nearly seven years, but this year was just my second time attending Art in Bloom. It’s such a neat event that I’ve now made it a priority to attend every year.

For my birthday this year, Jake took the day off of work and among other things, we made a little excursion with Tommy to the Racine Art Museum. During our visit, we were able to view the 9th Annual International PEEPS Art Exhibition. Running for nearly three weeks around Easter each year, the event features over 100 entries, showcasing more than 170 artists.

Railroad to Wonderland Garden Train Show at the Domes

Winter at the Mitchell Park Domes means the annual train show! Last year’s train theme, The Great Train Robbery, was pretty perfect. I wasn’t sure that an Alice in Wonderland theme would be as neat. But as always, the Domes outdid themselves and put so much effort into every little detail. Highlights include, but are not limited to, a real-life sized tea party and Queen’s Croquet-Ground. You’ll visit the Mad Hatter, White Rabbit, Humpty Dumpty, Queen of Hearts, Cheshire Cat, and more. I really love the aesthetic of this show. Having trains run through Alice in Wonderland is so much fun.

Mirroring Alice in Wonderland, the Domes staff chose plants ranging in size from miniature to large than life. The red and white landscape features pansies, azaleas, petunias, and cyphea as well as two flamingo-shaped topiaries made of hypoestes.

Winter Lake Views

It’s been a minute since I’ve posted Lake Michigan views on the blog. The lake has been really high for nearly a year now, making it hard to do a lot of beach wandering. While I see the lake every day right from our house and during walks in the neighborhood, baby wearing and picture taking on the beach don’t really mix. So I’ve been enjoying lake views but not taking so many pictures of them.

Needless to say, I’ve missed it. I was so glad to get an opportunity to sneak down to the beach for a bit last month. We had almost no ice formations last year, and it’s been fun to see some really neat ones again this year.
