Vintage green illustrated Christmas carols make gorgeous wall art for the holiday season. They’re also ideal for caroling books, Christmas cards, and endless holiday craft projects.
From around 1940 through the 1960s, during the Christmas season, many businesses, such as legal firms, drug stores, and insurance companies, gave away caroling books to their customers. Many of these booklets include beautiful illustrations to accompany the carols.
When I shared my color illustration carols collection a couple of years ago, I said that if I ever found the similar green set that’s been circulating on Pinterest quite regularly for the past decade, I would share it here. It took me a long time to find the color illustration version. It was truly a needle-in-a-haystack search to track down the green version. I’m so thrilled that I did. Every other version of these carols that you’ll find online (and there are a lot of them) has been created from the original scanned set on Flickr. All of the pages that I’m sharing here are from my own scans from vintage booklets that I purchased.
The green color in this carols set is so lovely. There are 14 popular Christmas carols in the collection, each with a pretty title, border, and illustration. The booklet also features two pages of additional carols without illustrations and an interior front cover page with a quote from Charles Dickens. Additionally, I’m including the front and back covers, which have even more charming full-color illustrations. Enjoy!
In my VintageDigitalRose shop, I also have the ATC versions and white background versions of the green illustrated carols!
How to use free printable vintage Christmas music
When you’re looking for printable vintage sheet music, usually you already know how you’re going to use it. If you’re searching for inspiration or just want a few more ideas for your new Christmas carols, consider one or more of the following projects.
- DIY wall art. One of the most common ways to use vintage Christmas carols is to create your own home decor. With such beautiful detailed green illustrations, the sheet music in this collection is ready to print and frame for festive holiday wall art.
- Choir and caroling books. Vintage Christmas carols add a whimsical touch to caroling books for the holiday season.
- Greeting cards. Many people (myself included) enjoy using antique carols to make their own Christmas cards to send to family and friends.
- Christmas ornaments. I love using Christmas carols for ornaments. I have a tutorial for vintage music ornaments and a tutorial for large simple sheet music ornaments, both of which work well with these carols. Ornaments are the perfect small gift for family, friends, co-workers, and teachers and are great for selling online and/or at craft fairs during the holiday season.
- Glass or bottle cap magnets are ideal for any kind of vintage sheet music, including Christmas songs. I have a tutorial for sheet music magnets.
- Pendant necklaces, using the above tutorial but swapping in pendant bails for magnets.
- Tile coasters. Tile coasters are another versatile DIY concept that works well with any vintage paper. You can customize the aesthetic for different holidays and occasions.
- Art journals and other mixed media projects. Old sheet music is a popular medium for art/junk journals and other types of mixed media art. Christmas carols are beautiful on their own and look great layered with ink, stamps, paint, and more.
- Scrapbooking. Antique sheet music makes whimsical backgrounds and can be used for endless decorative components in both digital and physical scrapbooks. It’s also perfect for DIY scrapbook embellishments.

Printing vintage Christmas carols
When you use vintage sheet music and other antique printable pages to create your own wall art and other home decor, my personal recommendation is Finestra Art Paper for at-home printing. Finestra Art Paper features an acid-free, matte surface, which dries ink quickly, producing crisp, vivid images. I prefer the results that Finestra offers over regular printer paper, card stock, and presentation paper.
Aside from basic affiliate earnings, I don’t receive any compensation from Finestra for promoting their products. I found them through my own research and have used them for numerous personal home decor and blog post projects over the years.
If you prefer to send your wall art to a printing service, my top recommendation is Printique. Their products are beautiful, and their prices, turnaround times, and website navigation are competitive.
For art/junk journals and DIY projects, I recommend white card stock. When you’re using vintage sheet music for scrapbook embellishments, Christmas cards, and mixed media art, it’s not as important that the images are really vibrant. When your project involves multiple coats of Mod Podge or diamond glaze, such as pendant necklaces, glass magnets, or tile coasters, you won’t be able to tell any difference in the finish of your paper. As such, card stock is a good choice because it’s less expensive and still very durable and high-quality.
